Murrupurtiyanuwu Catholic School is a Catholic primary school that caters for boys and girls from preschool to Year 6. It is managed by a Tiwi Principal, supported by a non-Indigenous Deputy Principal and a Tiwi leadership team.  Bathurst Island and Melville Islands are two Islands 80km north of Darwin, commonly known as the Tiwi Islands and home to the Tiwi people.  The Tiwi have their own language and culture and the children at MCS come to school speaking Tiwi.  The use of English as a Second Language strategies and programs is an important underpinning feature of all curriculum areas.  The school conducts a formal Indigenous Languages and Culture program, which is delivered by Indigenous teachers and community elders through the medium of the Tiwi language.  There is also a Literature Production Centre for language resource production and this also swerves as a cultural link between school and community.
